South Street
Street guide, Emsworth
South Street runs from the foot of the High Street down to the Quay and the harbour, and it is the street that gives Emsworth its particular character. The gradient is gentle but perceptible, and as you walk south the buildings thin out and the light changes as the harbour opens up ahead. Fat Olives restaurant occupies a converted cottage at the top of the street and is one of the most respected dining establishments in the area. The Blue Bell pub is another landmark, an old coaching inn with low ceilings and a good selection of ales. The houses are a mix of Georgian townhouses and smaller fisherman's cottages, many with original features and the patina of two or three centuries of use. South Street is the most photographed street in Emsworth, and the most desirable address in town. Properties rarely come to market and sell quickly when they do.
