Nile Street

Street guide, Emsworth

Nile Street is a short street near the harbour in Emsworth, running between South Street and the waterfront area. The name, like many streets in English coastal towns, reflects the maritime connections and the patriotic naming fashions of the Georgian era, when Nelson's victory at the Nile in 1798 inspired street names across the country. The street is lined with period cottages and small houses, many dating from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Properties on Nile Street are close to both the harbour and the town centre, making them highly desirable. The street is narrow and carries minimal traffic. It has the intimate, compact character of a fishing town's back street, with small frontages and irregular rooflines that speak of centuries of incremental building.
