Trains from Emsworth

Railway services, commuting, and connections to London

Emsworth station is on the Coastway West line, operated by Southern Railway, providing direct services between Brighton and Portsmouth Harbour. The station is on the northern edge of the town centre, within a five-minute walk of the High Street. Services call at Chichester (approximately ten minutes), Havant (five minutes), and Portsmouth and Southsea (twenty minutes), among other stops.

For commuters, the railway provides the most practical connection to the main employment centres. The service to Portsmouth takes around twenty minutes, and the frequency, roughly two trains per hour during peak times, is adequate for commuting. The journey to Chichester is shorter, making the town accessible for work, shopping, and leisure. The service continues to Brighton, though the full journey takes over an hour.

For London, the most common route is to change at Havant for a direct South Western Railway service to London Waterloo, which takes approximately ninety minutes. Alternatively, the Southern service to Brighton connects to Thameslink and other London services. The Havant change is generally the faster and more reliable option for London-bound commuters.

The station itself is modest: two platforms, a small shelter, and ticket machines. There is no staffed ticket office. Car parking at the station is limited, and many commuters walk or cycle to the station rather than drive. The station's proximity to the town centre means that most Emsworth residents are within walking distance.

Season ticket prices reflect the distance to London and the service pattern. The railway is a genuine asset for the town, providing connections that would otherwise require driving, and the existence of the station is one of the factors that makes Emsworth viable as a commuter settlement while retaining its small-town character.
