Cycling in Emsworth
Cycle routes, paths, and two-wheeled transport in the area
Emsworth is well placed for cycling, with relatively flat terrain on the coastal plain and a network of on-road and off-road routes connecting the town to the surrounding area. The Shipwright's Way long-distance cycle and walking route passes through or near the town, connecting Alice Holt Forest to the coast. The route uses a combination of quiet lanes, bridleways, and dedicated paths.
The most popular local cycling routes follow the coast road towards Chichester to the west and Havant to the east. Both routes are on relatively flat ground, though the A259 itself carries traffic that can be heavy at peak times. More experienced cyclists use the quieter lanes to the north, heading towards Westbourne, Funtington, and the South Downs foothills, where the terrain becomes more rolling and the traffic lighter.
Within the town, cycling is a practical mode of transport for reaching the station, the shops, and the harbour. The compact size of Emsworth means that most journeys are short enough to cycle comfortably. Cycle parking is available in the town centre, though provision is modest.
The Chichester Harbour AONB provides opportunities for off-road cycling on bridleways and permitted paths, though some sections of the harbour footpath network are for walkers only. The lanes to the south of the town, heading towards Thorney Island and the harbour shore, are quiet and scenic.
For those without their own bike, cycle hire is available in the wider area, and some accommodation providers in Emsworth offer bike loan or hire as part of their service. The cycling infrastructure in the area is improving, with new cycle paths planned as part of the broader transport strategy for the Havant borough. Emsworth's flat terrain, small scale, and pleasant surroundings make it a natural place for cycling, whether for transport or recreation.
