Parking in Emsworth

Where to park, charges, and resident permits

Parking in Emsworth is one of the practical challenges of living in and visiting a small town with a historic street pattern designed for horses and carts rather than motor cars. The main public car park is on South Street, near the harbour, and operates on a pay-and-display basis. The car park on Palmers Road provides additional spaces. On-street parking is available on several town centre streets, though many have time restrictions or resident-only designations.

At weekends and during the summer months, parking pressure increases significantly. Visitors to the harbour, the town centre shops, and the walking routes around Chichester Harbour all arrive by car, and the limited supply of spaces means that finding somewhere to park can require patience. Arriving early on a fine Saturday or Sunday morning improves your chances considerably.

Resident parking permits are available from Havant Borough Council for those living in streets with controlled parking zones. The permits do not guarantee a space but give permit holders priority over visitors. The permit system has been introduced in response to the parking pressure caused by visitor traffic and commuter parking near the railway station.

The railway station has very limited parking, and those commuting from Emsworth by train are encouraged to walk or cycle to the station. Some commuters park on residential streets near the station, which has been a source of friction with residents and has contributed to the introduction of parking restrictions.

For visitors, the advice is straightforward: use the pay-and-display car parks, arrive early on busy days, and consider using public transport. The bus from Havant drops you in the centre of town, and the train station is a short walk from the High Street. Cycling is a practical option for those coming from the surrounding area, and cycle parking is available in the town centre.
