Commuting from Emsworth
Getting to work from Hampshire's harbour town
Emsworth's position on the coastal transport corridor makes it a viable commuter base for employment in Portsmouth, Havant, Chichester, and, with longer journey times, London and Southampton. The railway station provides the most straightforward commuting option, with Southern Railway services running to Portsmouth (approximately twenty minutes) and Chichester (approximately ten minutes). For London, a change at Havant onto South Western Railway services reaches Waterloo in about ninety minutes.
By road, the A27 bypass to the north provides access to the wider road network. Portsmouth is approximately thirty minutes by car under normal conditions, though this can extend significantly at peak times. Chichester is twenty minutes. The A3(M), accessible via Havant, provides a route northward to Petersfield, Guildford, and the M25.
Many Emsworth commuters work in the Portsmouth and Havant area and use a combination of train, car, and bicycle depending on their destination and preference. The town's compact size means that most residents can walk or cycle to the station, avoiding the parking difficulties that affect the station and its immediate surroundings.
The appeal of commuting from Emsworth is the quality of life at the home end. Returning from a day's work in Portsmouth or Chichester to a harbour town with independent shops, good pubs, and a waterfront walk provides a contrast that a suburban location cannot match. The trade-off is that commuting takes time and costs money, and the railway service, while adequate, is not as frequent as commuters from larger towns might expect.
Homeworking has become more common since 2020, and Emsworth is well suited to it. The broadband provision is adequate for most purposes, and the cafes provide a change of scene for those who need it. The town's quality of life is arguably even more valuable for those who work from home and experience it throughout the day rather than just in the evenings and at weekends.
