Victorian Oyster Prosperity

1860

The mid-to-late Victorian period was the golden age of the Emsworth oyster trade. The beds in Chichester Harbour produced millions of oysters annually, and Emsworth oysters were prized in the London markets. The town grew prosperous on the trade, with oyster merchants building substantial houses and the harbour bustling with the boats that worked the beds. The Emsworth oyster was considered among the finest in England, and the town's reputation was built on the quality and abundance of its shellfish. Oyster packing houses, storage facilities, and associated businesses lined the waterfront. The trade employed a significant proportion of the town's population, directly and indirectly.
