Emsworth Railway Station Opens
1845
Emsworth station opened in 1845 on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway line between Brighton and Portsmouth. The arrival of the railway connected Emsworth to the national rail network and opened the town to visitors and commuters in a way that the coaching road never had. The station brought new residents who could now live in the pleasant harbour town while working in Portsmouth, Chichester, or even London. The railway also facilitated the oyster trade, allowing fresh Emsworth oysters to be dispatched quickly to markets in London and other cities. The station remains in use today, served by Southern Railway services between Brighton and Portsmouth.
