Coastal Walks near Emsworth
Shore paths, long-distance routes, and seaside walking
Emsworth sits at the junction of several coastal walking routes, making it an excellent base for shore-path walking. The Chichester Harbour shoreline extends in both directions from the town, with paths following the harbour edge through the AONB to the west and connecting to Langstone Harbour to the east.
The westward route follows the harbour shore through Thornham to Prinsted and on to Nutbourne and Bosham. This is a walk of genuine beauty, passing through saltmarsh, along seawalls, and past the open waters of the harbour channels. The path is part of the Chichester Harbour Walk, a long-distance route that circumnavigates the entire harbour. The section from Emsworth to Bosham takes approximately two to three hours and can be combined with a bus return for a linear walk.
To the east, the path follows the shore of Langstone Harbour towards Warblington and the bridge to Hayling Island. This route passes through a landscape that is wilder and less frequented than the Chichester Harbour side, with extensive mudflats and open views across the harbour to Portsea Island and Portsmouth.
The Solent Way, a long-distance footpath running along the Hampshire coast, passes through the Emsworth area and provides a link to the wider coastal path network. Sections of the England Coast Path, the national trail, are also being developed in this area.
For those wanting a longer day out, the combination of harbour and coastal paths makes it possible to walk from Emsworth to Bosham (approximately five miles one way) or from Emsworth to Langstone and Hayling Island (approximately four miles to the bridge). Both routes are essentially flat and follow the shoreline, though surfaces vary from paved paths to grassy tracks.
The coastal walking around Emsworth is at its most atmospheric in autumn and winter, when the low light, the migrant birds, and the emptier paths create a landscape of great beauty and solitude.
