Harbour Trade and Development

1700

The eighteenth century saw Emsworth develop as a small but active harbour town. Coastal trade brought goods in and out, with corn, coal, and timber among the principal cargoes. The quay was improved and commercial buildings erected to serve the trade. The harbour was never large enough for major shipping, but it served the local economy well, connecting Emsworth to the wider coastal trading network. The town grew around the harbour, with merchants, fishermen, and tradesmen building the houses that still line South Street and the town centre. The Georgian buildings that define modern Emsworth date largely from this period of harbour-driven prosperity.
