Emsworth at the Millennium
2000
At the turn of the millennium, Emsworth was a well-established residential community of around ten thousand people, valued for its harbour, its independent shops, and its position between the South Downs and the sea. The town had navigated the decline of its oyster trade, the pressures of post-war development, and the changing economics of small towns to emerge as a desirable place to live and visit. Community organisations, the arts scene, the annual events programme, and the Conservation Area protections all contributed to a sense of place that many larger towns had lost. The millennium marked a moment of reflection for a town that had been shaped by the sea and was now shaped by the people who chose to live beside it.
