Westbourne Road Area
Western residential area connecting Emsworth to Westbourne, with Victorian and Edwardian housing and a suburban, family-oriented character.
The Westbourne Road area covers the western approach to Emsworth, stretching towards the neighbouring village of Westbourne. Westbourne Road is a residential street lined with a mix of Victorian and Edwardian houses, inter-war semis, and some later twentieth-century development. The character is suburban rather than historic, though some of the larger Victorian properties have considerable presence. The road connects Emsworth to Westbourne, which has its own village character and shops, making this a well-used route for pedestrians and cyclists as well as motorists. Allotments and green spaces along the road provide breaks in the built-up frontage. The area is popular with families, offering larger houses with gardens at prices somewhat lower than the premium waterfront locations closer to the harbour. Washington Road branches off towards the south, connecting to the Lumley area and the recreation ground. The western side of Emsworth has a quieter, more residential feel than the town centre and harbour, but it is still within comfortable walking distance of the High Street shops and the waterfront. Several of the roads in this area were developed in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods as Emsworth expanded beyond its historic core, and the street pattern reflects that planned, regular layout.
