South Street Area

Historic street running from town centre to harbour, with Georgian houses, the Blue Bell pub, Fat Olives restaurant, and views down to the water.

South Street connects the town centre to the harbour and is one of the most attractive streets in Emsworth. The road slopes gently downhill towards the water, lined with a mix of Georgian houses, Victorian cottages, and the occasional older timber-framed building. Fat Olives, housed in a converted fisherman's cottage, is one of the best restaurants in the area and has drawn food-conscious visitors to Emsworth for years. The Blue Bell pub, an old coaching inn, stands on South Street and remains one of the town's most characterful drinking spots. The street has an unhurried feel, with small front gardens, period doorways, and the occasional glimpse of the harbour at the far end drawing you towards the water. Properties on South Street command a premium, reflecting the combination of historic character, proximity to the harbour, and the general desirability of the street. The area around South Street includes some of the oldest surviving buildings in the town, and the mix of residential and commercial uses gives it a lived-in quality that purely residential streets lack. Walking down South Street on a fine afternoon, with the light on the brick and the smell of the harbour drifting up, is one of the small pleasures of Emsworth.
